FinTech Startups in India: What Comes After UPI?
India’s FinTech sector is moving beyond UPI as startups explore AI-powered payments, digital lending, tokenisation, agentic payments and new ways to make financial services faster and smarter. This article looks at what could shape the next phase of India’s FinTech revolution.

India’s FinTech story has changed the way people use money. From standing in long queues at banks to making instant payments through a mobile phone, the country has moved a long way in a short time. At the centre of this change has been UPI, which has become a part of everyday life for millions of Indians.
But now, an interesting question is coming up: What comes after UPI?
The answer may not be another payment system. Instead, the next phase of FinTech could be about making payments and financial services smarter, more personalised and more automated.
UPI is still growing
Before looking at what comes next, it is important to understand how big UPI has become. In August 2026, UPI processed a record 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 trillion.
This shows that UPI is not going away. In fact, it is still growing. The next generation of FinTech startups will most likely build new services around this digital payment infrastructure rather than replace it.
AI could change the way we pay
One of the biggest changes could come from Artificial Intelligence.
Imagine telling your AI assistant, “Order my usual groceries,” and the assistant checks the price, places the order and makes the payment within a limit you have already approved.
This idea is known as agentic payments, where an AI agent can carry out certain financial transactions on behalf of a user.
India is already preparing a framework that could allow AI agents to make small UPI payments without asking the user for approval every time. The proposed system is expected to include safeguards such as spending limits, identity checks and rules for payments.
For FinTech startups, this could create a completely new area of business.
FinTech will move beyond payments
The future of FinTech is also about helping people manage their money better.
Startups are looking at digital lending, automated financial planning, investment platforms, fraud detection and personalised financial services. AI is already being used across areas such as underwriting, fraud detection, KYC and customer support.
This could make financial services faster and easier, especially for small businesses and people who have traditionally found it difficult to access formal credit.
Tokenisation is another big opportunity
Another technology attracting attention is tokenisation.
In simple terms, tokenisation means representing an asset digitally so that it can potentially be managed or transferred using digital technology. Maharashtra and the RBI are currently working on a framework for tokenisation of financial and real-world assets, with gold being discussed as a possible starting point.
For startups, this could open new possibilities in investment, asset ownership and financial services.
What does this mean for FinTech startups?
The next FinTech winners may not simply be companies that make payments faster. They could be companies that make financial decisions smarter and more convenient.
A startup that combines UPI with AI, investment, lending or financial planning could offer customers a much broader experience through one platform.
At the same time, security will become extremely important. As more financial decisions are automated, companies will have to focus on privacy, fraud prevention and customer trust.
The road ahead
India has already built one of the world’s largest digital payment ecosystems. Now the opportunity is to build the next layer on top of it.
UPI may have changed how India pays. The next wave of FinTech could change how India saves, invests, borrows and manages money.
For startups, the message is clear: the future is not simply about another UPI. It is about creating a smarter financial ecosystem around it.
