The Hero Motors IPO may have attracted strong demand, but the real story is hiding behind that headline-grabbing 6.66x subscription.
The ₹1,000-crore IPO received bids for 58.97 crore shares against 8.86 crore shares on offer, showing strong investor interest. But dig into the category-wise numbers, and the picture becomes a little more complicated.
Retail Investors Wanted In. Institutions Were More Cautious.
The IPO opened on September 16 and closed on September 18, and it was subscribed 8.23 times by retail investors and 9.86 times by non-institutional investors (NII).
The QIB portion, however, was subscribed only 1.49 times. That difference is worth noticing.
A 6.66x overall subscription sounds impressive, but it does not mean every investor category showed the same level of enthusiasm. Retail and NII demand was considerably stronger than institutional demand.
And that raises an uncomfortable question: is the excitement around Hero Motors being driven more by individual investors than by large institutional buyers?
What Are Investors Actually Buying?
Hero Motors' IPO comes with a price band of ₹79–₹84 per share. The issue consists of a ₹600-crore fresh issue and a ₹400-crore offer for sale (OFS) by O P Munjal Holdings and Hero Cycle.
The company plans to use ₹190 crore from the fresh issue towards repayment or prepayment of certain borrowings. Another ₹200 crore is earmarked for capital expenditure, mainly equipment for expanding its Gautam Buddha Nagar facility.
The remaining money is planned for inorganic growth initiatives and general corporate purposes.
As of July 31, 2026, Hero Motors had outstanding borrowings of ₹289.54 crore. So, debt reduction is clearly one part of the IPO story.
The Business Behind the IPO
Hero Motors is not the same company as listed Hero MotoCorp. It is an automotive technology company focused on engineered powertrain solutions for electric and non-electric applications.
Its customers include names such as BMW, Ducati, Enviolo, Formula Motorsport, Hummingbird EV and HWA. As of March 31, 2026, it had six manufacturing facilities across India, the UK, and Thailand.
For FY26, the company reported ₹1,188.35 crore in sales and ₹41.17 crore in consolidated net profit.
What Happens Now?
The basis of allotment was finalised on September 21, while shares are scheduled to be credited to demat accounts on September 22, and the stock is expected to list on September 23, 2026. Investors can check allotment through KFin Technologies, NSE or BSE.
The grey market story has also changed. While the IPO had earlier commanded a premium, the latest Economic Times report noted no current GMP, making the listing outcome harder to read. GMP is unofficial and should not be treated as a guarantee of listing gains.
The bigger takeaway? Hero Motors clearly generated demand, but the 6.66x headline doesn't tell the entire story. The category-wise subscription, the company's relatively modest FY26 profit, and the uncertain GMP make the upcoming listing much more interesting than the subscription number alone suggests.
