Uber India is adding new ways for drivers to earn, access safety support, and manage their work. Announced at Uber Pragati on October 29, 2026, the updates target the company’s nearly 20 lakh driver partners and include encrypted trip recording, emergency ambulance assistance, flexible subscription passes, and new delivery opportunities.

On paper, the changes look promising. But India’s gig economy faces a bigger question: Are platforms improving drivers’ working conditions, or simply giving them more ways to work?

More earning options do not guarantee higher take-home income. Likewise, safety technology can help document incidents, but it cannot prevent every confrontation or guarantee a fair resolution. The real test will be whether drivers experience measurable improvements in their everyday work.

1. Encrypted Video Recording: Can Technology Help Resolve Disputes?

Uber’s ‘Record My Ride’ feature allows drivers to record trips using encrypted video. The aim is to help establish what happened when a dispute arises between a driver and a passenger.

According to Uber, recordings remain inaccessible by default and can be submitted through the appropriate safety-reporting process. Law enforcement agencies may also seek access through the company’s formal procedures. Uber says the feature has already helped police establish facts in a disputed incident.

This could be valuable in a business where conflicting accounts can lead to complaints, investigations or consequences for drivers.

However, recording is only one part of the solution. Drivers also need accessible complaint mechanisms, timely investigations and clear explanations when decisions affect their accounts.

Uber is introducing a chat safety feature that flags potentially inappropriate messages. Drivers receiving such messages can cancel eligible trips without affecting their cancellation statistics.

These are useful safeguards, but their effectiveness will depend on how consistently they work in real-world situations.

2. More Earning Options — But Will Drivers Actually Earn More?

Uber is expanding opportunities beyond conventional passenger rides. Drivers can explore intercity bike trips in selected locations, deliver business orders through Uber Direct, and transport personal packages using Uber Parcel.

Car drivers can also participate in Uber Pet, which serves passengers travelling with their pets. The company continues to offer referral rewards for bringing new drivers onto the platform.

The advantage is flexibility. A driver may be able to combine passenger rides with deliveries or choose additional services depending on local demand.

But there is an important distinction between earning more revenue and keeping more money.

Fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance, platform-related costs and unpaid waiting time can all affect take-home earnings. Additional services may create opportunities, but the outcome will depend on demand, trip availability, and operating expenses.

Without transparent information on average net earnings, it is difficult to determine how much these features improve drivers’ financial position.

3. Flexible Passes and WhatsApp Onboarding

Uber’s Flexible Drive Pass offers subscription periods ranging from six hours to 180 days. This gives drivers more choice over how they access the platform, depending on their working patterns.

Its Quickstart feature enables onboarding through WhatsApp, while ‘Earn First, Pay Later’ allows eligible drivers to continue accepting cash trips when their balance runs out, within an applicable credit limit.

The company has also simplified its Driver app and introduced voice notes in in-app chat.

These changes could reduce friction for drivers who want simpler onboarding or more flexible work arrangements. However, credit-based access should not be mistaken for additional income. Drivers need to understand the applicable terms, limits, and financial implications before relying on it.

4. Emergency Assistance: A Useful Step, but Not the Finish Line

Uber’s ambulance assistance service, developed with Dial 4242 and accessible through its 24-hour safety line, has reportedly been used 25 times in less than four months.

The company has also introduced a Driver Safety Hub that brings selected safety tools together in one place.

Emergency support can make a meaningful difference when an accident occurs. Still, the number of times a service has been used does not, by itself, establish how effective it is—response times, availability across locations, and the quality of assistance matter just as much.

5. What Should Drivers and the Industry Watch Next?

Uber’s latest announcements highlight three areas worth monitoring:

  • Net earnings: Do drivers retain more money after expenses, or complete more trips?

  • Safety outcomes: Are complaints resolved faster, and do recording tools help establish facts fairly?

  • Practical access: Are the new services and emergency support available consistently across cities and working conditions?

These measures would offer a clearer picture of the changes’ real impact than feature announcements alone.

The Bottom Line

Uber’s new features address genuine concerns around safety, convenience, and earning flexibility. They could make the platform more useful for drivers, particularly those seeking additional income streams or better ways to document disputes.

But the bigger challenge remains: making gig work not only flexible, but also financially worthwhile and safer in practice.

More features are a start. Better outcomes for drivers are the real benchmark.
